The Shark Meat Records' vision of a digital music economy has already taken hold. The latest music sales figures now show the iTunes music retailer in the #1 position among ALL physical and digital music stores passing the music giants of yesteryear including Walmart and Best Buy. The Apple iTunes Store has climbed to the #1 position in retail music sales according to the NPG Group market research data collected via the MusicWatch survey and based upon January - February 2008 sales data.
When Shark Meat Records was founded in 2005, we bet on digital music and technology as the future of the industry. People always asked us "who is your distributor" and we would respond saying that we were focused on Digital Distribution with key stores such as iTunes. At music conferences and events traditional physical CD distributors would say "sign with us" and in response we would kindly decline.
A new chapter in the digital music revolution begins now. Among the others in the top ten list, Rhapsody is the only other pure-digital company. The only truly traditional music-only store that made the cut was FYE/Coconuts as most others including Tower Records have closed their doors or downsized in recent years.
At Shark Meat Records, we are excited to forge ahead as a digital-focused artist-friendly new kind of indie record label. As more people turn toward iTunes and our other digital music distributors such as Napster, we look forward to more people discovering the music of our indie artists.
